Flying insect - Tipula abdominalis

Flying insect - Tipula abdominalis
Canada/Amherst/CumberlandCounty/NovaScotia County, Nova Scotia, Canada
August 19, 2016
Size: roughly 3.5 inches w/legs
At first I though maybe some sort of dragonfly but the dimensions jut aren't right for that.

Moved from ID Request.

Thanks
I've never seen one like this around here we have smaller lighter ones that look like over sized mosquitoes. It's been in that spot for two day's now... is that weird? Don't they have a fairly short life span

Don't know
I don't know how long these live. Insects may only look for mates under certain weather or light conditions. Seeing one there all day is not surprising. Two days is a long time.

Tipula abdominalis
Tipula abdominalis, one of our largest crane flies.
