Texas Brown Tarantula - Aphonopelma hentzi - male

Texas Brown Tarantula - Aphonopelma hentzi - Male
Just south of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA
July 7, 2007
I found this handsome fellow while driving down a country road near where I live. He was about to cross the road as I came around a curve on a hot summer day. From a distance I noticed something a little odd in the road and slowed down a bit to see what it was. At a glance I thought it was just a clump of leaves or something along those lines, but when I got closer he raised his front legs in time for me to notice the movement as I drove past him. He was just on the edge of the road and about to become road-kill, so I turned around and went back and got him into a cup I had in the car so I could relocate him to a safer place.

I took several photos of him before releasing him next to a large pond out behind my house. I noticed that there are not many images of this species in this guide page, so I'll add a few more. If more of different or specific angles/shots are wanted, just drop me a line.

Enjoy,
GD
