Unknown Beetle - Dynastes tityus

Unknown Beetle - Dynastes tityus
Gainsville, Prince William County, Virginia, USA
July 17, 2007
Help,

I’m trying to find out the name of this "creature", actually it’s a beetle of some kind. It looks just like a beetle but its 1-1/4" long (or more) and 3/4" wide (approx). It almost looks prehistoric. Any ideas? Oh yes, when I found it, it was dead so I scooped it up and have it in a cup

Moved
Moved from Beetles.

Eastern Hercules beetle.
This is either a female, or minor male of the eastern Hercules beetle, Dynastes tityus. Please see existing images in the guide pages for comparison. It does disturb me that these insects are DRIVING now. Human motorists are scary enough:-) Oh, the car keys are just for scale???

the Unknown Beetle is now known
Thanks so much for the informaiton on the beetle. The name fits it perfectly. Never seen a bug that size before.

Thanks again!
