Northernmost record of - Polistes dominula - female

Northernmost record of - Polistes dominula - Female
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
August 17, 2016
Size: nest 40 x 63 mm
I discovered this nest near the Royal Alberta Museum on August 11 after I collected a single worker ca. 60 m from the nest on August 8, 2016. This is the first record of Polistes dominula in Edmonton, and appears to be the northernmost record of the species in all of North America. We removed the nest on August 17. It was inhabited by 12 wasps (probably all females but two escaped). The nest had 146 cells in total, 38 of which were capped. Thirteen cells were re-occupied, indicating that a maximum of 13 wasps had emerged up to this point. There were 33 eggs and 76 larvae of various stages. [Photo credit to my colleague Samuel Owen]
