Unknown bug?

I'm sorry I dont know much about bugs, insects and so on.
I was at work today and we saw something behind and oil tank outside, I didn't get a great look at it due to where it was and didn't have a camera. I have searched the web for something close to what I saw. maybe you guys can help.

It was 2-3 inches long, had what looked to be 2 wings that were black and smooth and rounded on the ends. the head looked kinda like a western conifer seed bug. almost like it had a neck. the feelers were long and fat. This thing was strange. I am located in NY if that helps.

One place to look is
Plecoptera here and another might be Corydalidae here. If you find something there that looks close, describe the difference between your bug and an image you see and someone might be able to pick up on what you saw.

from the pictures you linked
from the pictures you linked I would say it was a Male Eastern Dobsonfly the only big difference I see is wing color. The one I saw had black wings. When I saw it I thought I was seeing the front legs and feelers next to one another, but I see in the pics they just have 4 things coming off their head. I really wish I could have got a picture of it. Is it strange that I saw one in NY? only reason I ask is because I'm 29 and have never seen one in my life. Thank you very much for your info.

I haven't the faintest idea what your "bug" is, but perhaps a stroll through the website whatsthatbug.com might help you. I've found that site, along with this one, to be a huge asset!
