This looks a bit like a red-spotted purple, but the underside of the wing has a tad more orange than most posted on the guide. Although I didn't get a picture, the top of the wing was much more blue-black.

Can be variable

Thanks, Cliff--that's what I thought, but I'm not very experienced. I know there are some tricky butterflies out there, e.g., Spicebush vs. Black Swallowtail.
