Definitely Dasymutilla
We will have to wait for Kevin Williams or William Ericson to ID this to the species. I believe it is new to BG, maybe D. quadrigutatta. I have never seen this kind before. Great shot. Don't know if you collect, but would love one of these. Please move this to the dasymutilla page as I don't have BG editor permission.

Dasymutilla sp it is...
... for the time being anyway.

I don't collect, just briefly intern some uncooperative specimens -- like velvet ants that refuse to hold still for a photograph. This one was a catch and release back in mid-June. Sorry about that. :-(

Interestingly, this velvet ant was an early bird. Velvet ants (mostly Cow Killers) are numerous now, but there were two or three of these in the same general area back in mid-June. I have no idea if that is characteristic for this species or just a fluke.

Thanks for your help.

Marvin
