Found in Dayton, Nevada - Argiope trifasciata

Found in Dayton, Nevada - Argiope trifasciata
Dayton , Lyon County, Nevada, USA
September 8, 2016
Size: larger than half dollar
The top is white but the legs are striped yellow, black and white and the belly has an incredible yellow/black/white design. He/she is slightly larger than a half dollar, including the legs. I was thinking Orb Spider but not sure. It was found in Dayton, Nevada at my wife's work in a huge web with tornado like shaped parts of the web, on the side of the building. Actually was kind of friendly. Came right up to my wife while she was taking video of it, sat for about 15 seconds and then slowly and calmly went back up its web which went from the sidewalk up the side of the building about 3.5ft. Am I right in thinking Orb? Are they native to Nevada? Thank you from someone who is learning to not be arachniphobic lol

Argiope trifasciata
Welcome to BugGuide. :)

Species Argiope trifasciata - Banded Argiope

This is an orb weaver. I don't know if this species is native to North America, but I do know that it is also found in Spain and Portugal and a few other countries. All orb weavers in North America are harmless to people, and they are among the most beneficial of all spiders, helping to keep flying insect populations in check.

What is the reason for the cyclone?
My wife just asked a good question....what is the reason for the cyclone?

Thank you!
I'm finding great info on this page and I'm so glad it's here! Thanks for that :)
And, I'm actually not afraid of this guy (which is odd lol), he's beautiful to me honestly! My wife has been doing everything she can to keep him safe and to keep people from killing him even though she is just as arachniphobic as I am lol
Thanks again!
