Virginian Tiger Moth - Spilosoma virginica

Virginian Tiger Moth - Spilosoma virginica
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
July 21, 2007
Size: Approx. 3/4 in. long
I came upon what I assumed to be a Satin Moth today, or at least, what I have identified as one, and it was engaged in the behavior that is pictured. The only difference between this one and the one I posted yesterday, was this one has tiny black dots on it's wings in two places.

I'm wondering what that substance is at the back of the moth, if it's being exuded by the moth and if it is, is it because it's a female specimen? I'll be posting better views of the back of the moth. It has now been identified as a Virginian Tiger Moth. Thanks to John Davis for that clarification. To me, both a Satin Moth and the Tiger Moth look identical except for the spots. I think that's pretty interesting.

Update - the reason I assumed this to be a Satin Moth was because the day before when I saw that one, what appears to actually be a Satin Moth, it was within five feet of where I saw this one. So, my thoughts just ran to them being the same kind. That, and the fact that I can't see orange probably was the main reasons why I misidentified it!

Substance
I couldn't find the plant where this moth had secreted/laid that substance. I think it got mowed by the neighbors since it was at the edge of their yard.

Ahh well, it was worth a try.

egg vs excrement
So ... does anyone know if it is egg laying? Kenneth are you keeping an eye on those little orange blobs?

Checking
I'll try to check back today and see if there's any change in that spot. If I can locate the exact leaf, that is. I should be able to, so if I find out anything, I'll be sure to update it here.

Moved
Moved from Satin Moth.

ID
With the orange on the legs and abdomen, and the spots on the wings, I think this might be a Virginian Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica).
