Clearwing Moth-Pennisetia marginata? - Albuna pyramidalis - female

Clearwing Moth-Pennisetia marginata? - Albuna pyramidalis - Female
Wrangell, Alaska, Southeast Alaska Panhandle County, Alaska, USA
July 20, 2007
Size: 3/4"
Is this Raspberry Crown Borer? Found on alder leaf next to logging road. Lots of salmonberry brush nearby which is closely related to raspberry. I've never seen one in my 20 years in SE Alaska.

Albuna pyramidalis female
The specimen photographed is an Albuna pyramidalis female. It is one of few clearwings that reach as far North as Alaska. Larvae are borers in roots of Epilobium sp. and Oenothera biennis (Eichlin & Duckworth 1988). The red-orange longitudinal band under the anterior transparent area is usually a good diagnosis feature of this highly polymorphic species.
