Unknown Sphecius? - Tremex columba

Unknown Sphecius? - Tremex columba
Winchester,MA, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
September 16, 2016
Size: About 4.0 to 4.5 cm
This wasp-like insect was initially taking interest in humans (just buzzing around them) near the Aberjona River in Winchester, MA. It alit on a nearby tree where I managed to get a few photos. Seems to have a huge ovipositor. Initially thought it was a wasp in the genus Sphecius (Cicada Killer). Abdominal elongation and shape seem off. Photos taken starting at 10:08 am (EDT).
