Northern Black Widow Spider - Latrodectus variolus - female

Northern Black Widow Spider - Latrodectus variolus - Female
Village of Ephraim, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
June 6, 2007
Adult female found by Kate Houston in her yard. ID by Steven Krauth, Curator of Insect Research Collection, UW-Madison and Phil Pellitteri, UW-Extension Entomologist. When I asked if this was a Northern Black Widow, Steve said, "Yes, the image is a Northern Black Widow. More common than you would think but very retiring and not to be messed with." Phil said, "All the records of the species in the state have come from Door County. No idea why."
