elmid species 1 - Dubiraphia vittata
Fall Creek, Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, USA

Size: just under 2mm
I've been looking for elmids for a long time ... mostly I'm never in the right places. Finally in the middle of Fall Creek I found lots of these attached to a plant growing under the water. I brought them (and 2 other species found later) home to photograph.

These were photographed through the side of a small plastic container I made, in water. They are at the water line in this photo, resulting in some odd lines and colors, but in general I was able to get much better photos in this container than when they were out of the container. These beetles are frustratingly small for photography. Out of water they look very awkward. I had great fun watching them under water though.

What a fun image
What a fun image, Joyce. Very neat, too ... great job.
