Unknown Black Beetle in San Diego - Calosoma

Unknown Black Beetle in San Diego - Calosoma
Coronado, San Diego County, California, USA
March 13, 2005
Size: Approximately 1 inch
I live in southern california and saw this beetle crawling along the kitchen floor. I have searched extensively and have come up blank as to its taxonomy and would really like to know if seeing one means that I'm not seeing many more. Thanks for your time, Cody.

Ground Beetle
Looks like a ground beetle, perhaps of the genus Calosoma. I am pretty sure they are solitary hunters...

I agree.
Definitely Calosoma, the so-called "searchers." Nice to have in the garden as they kill lots of cutworms and other pests. Pick them up, though, and they will stink to high heaven:-)
