Prionus
Thanks for the move and comment. It sounds as if you are saying my suggestion is wrong (which is fine) and I should go back and start over again. Actually, I had already done as you suggest, and also consulted Dillon, before suggesting Prionus latticollis. The choice seemed to be between P. latticollis and P. pocularis. On the basis of width of pronotum, robustness of antennae, and distance between the eyes, I went with P. latticollis. The color of the head and antennae is somewhat off, but colors vary as the guide shows. I just reviewed the info, and arrived at the same ID. Am I missing something here?

No,
I missed something. I had read only what was under the other photo, missing your guess as to full ID. Sometimes I get in too much of a hurry. P. laticollis looks good.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Knowing your beetle expertise, I felt I had to check everything. I should have just asked you, but a thorough review certainly did me no harm.

P. laticollis male.
The nearly black color, granular texture of the wing covers, relatively small size (you'll have to trust me there), and rather blunt teeth on the thorax all point to that species.

I've enjoyed your excellent photography
:-)
