I think this is a caterpillar of Schinia arcigera - Arcigera Flower Moth. Found on aster.

S. arcigera certainly seems like a possibility
That's what we would have suggested based on the Owlets book, but there are so many Schinia :(

Nothing for certain here, but
Nothing for certain here, but I'm not aware of any other Schinia present in the Midwest that looks much like this (and also feeds on aster). To me it seems very safe to call this Schinia arcigera.
