Unknown insect eating monarch - Stagmomantis carolina - female

Unknown insect eating monarch - Stagmomantis carolina - Female
Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA
September 23, 2016
There was a monarch butterfly trying to fly away, but it appeared stuck on this plant, and there was this bug with and oval round thick body eating it I think. The butterfly seemed to be struggling and it was going on for a good portion of time. Couldn't figure out what bug it was. The body looked way too thick to be a praying mantis. Still unsure of what it could be.
