Lady Beetle in flight: Harmonia axyridis - Harmonia axyridis

Lady Beetle in flight: Harmonia axyridis - Harmonia axyridis
Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, USA
October 1, 2006
I know it's out of focus, but I was happy to catch it in flight, as it was moving very fast. Are there different kinds of ladybugs?

Lady beetle.
Yes, there are many, many species of lady beetles. This particular one is an introduced species, Harmonia axyridis. Several U.S. lady beetles have been introduced here from overseas, but we have probably hundreds of native species, too. Most are very tiny, and very drab in appearance! The big red polkadot ones are the exceptions:-)

Thank you so much! Now I know
Thank you so much! Now I know, and will edit my info. I had no idea that the 'familiar' lady beetles that cover the walls in the Fall were the imported ones. No wonder we think they are all supposed to be bright red. It's kind of like Kudzu...imported, and now it covers everything (at least in the South East). :-o
