American Lady - Vanessa virginiensis

American Lady - Vanessa virginiensis
Massachusetts, USA
July 21, 2007
This should be obvious but it escapes me!

It's a, uh, it's an...
Now you've got me doing it. Was already to say "Paint*ed Lady", but saw that nearly perfect round spot and went scurrying for a book. How does American Lady strike you?

Ron
I had a similar experience but after looking at several images I think you nailed it.
This is my first 'American Lady' so I'll have to remember to add it to my gallery at my web site (address in my profile).
(Most of my butterfly images are not native to the US.)

Good one, Ron
I side on American Lady ... by the shape of the orange patches of the FW, the spotting on the HW and the tiny pale spot on the FW orange patch, which all point to Vanessa virginiensis.

Thanks, Stephen
I've never shot one, but I have had a lot of them IDed in my files. Wrongly!
