Marine Blue - Leptotes marina

Marine Blue - Leptotes marina
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
July 30, 2003
Tentatively IDing this as Leptotes marina, Marine Blue (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae) before placing it on a guide page. Any comments appreciated.

Marine Blue
Looks fine to me. The only real confusion species would be Cassius Blue, Leptotes cassius, which doesn't occur in your area. That heavy barring pattern is pretty unmistakable. Nice shot!

BugGuide's images of L.cassius helped a great deal in the final ID of this specimen, never trust a range map for something that can fly.

Range map
That's true to some degree; this species has made it all the way to Ontario and even bred for a summer. However, the likeliest species is of course the one that's within its normal range. It's nice to have both Lepoptes species available now for a comparison.
