Scissor Grinder? - Tibicen auletes - Male
Virginia Beach, Virginia, Virginia, USA
July 26, 2007
Size: Head to wingtip - 70-80mm
My daughter found the young cicada on our front walk. I decided to do something I've been wanting to do since I was a child in the mid 1960's. Get a series of photos showing a cicada emerging from its shell.

I placed the young cicada on an oak tree in my backyard and set my camera gear up for a shoot. I did a series of 50 images that turned out very well from start to finish (12:30 am to 3:30 am). Since rules allow posting a few images, I will post one from the middle of the sequence and two from the end for ID purposes.

Tibicen auletes are very common in my area and I have a yard with many large oak trees. One can hear these cicadas singing their beautiful songs in the late summer evenings of July/August.

Can someone confirm the ID? I would be most grateful,

Scott

This is an incredible series,
This is an incredible series, it would be okay to add more images of this sequence as they would be excellent reference. Even better, see if you can photoshop a sequence together in one image

Thank you Will!
I added four more, but somehow got them all mixed up :^(. I'm sort of new here and don't know how to rearrange and link the images in their proper order.
