striped diving beetle - Agabus disintegratus

striped diving beetle - Agabus disintegratus
Parkhill Conservation Area, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
November 5, 2004
Size: 7-10 mm
A hideous photo of an attractive beetle, this individual had just surfaced for air and is now carrying a bubble to the bottom of the pond - only 5 cm deep here near the shore. Looks similar to the image of Agabus disintegratus here; does anyone know whether the broken stripe on each elytron is a distinguishing mark?

Agabus disintegratus (Crotch 1873)
Robin-

There are many species of Agabus, but of the ones we have here in the collection, only one looks quite like your photo, and that is your hunch- A. disintegratus (Dytiscidae: Colymbetinae: Agabini). Few seem to have striped elytra and none have that curious break in the stripe near the humerus (shoulder).

Another neat beetle!

cheers,

zack
