orange-legged black beetle - Harpalus

orange-legged black beetle - Harpalus
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
July 10, 2004
Size: about 12 mm
These spiny-legged ones were regular visitors to our porch in July and August.

Moved
Moved from Harpalus.

Ground beetle.
This is one of the carabids, probably Harpalus sp.

I agree, Harpalus (Pseudoophonus) sp.
This is indeed a member of Harpalus, and more specifically of the widespread and common subgenus Pseudoophonus, a taxonomist's worst nightmare. There are about a dozen species in North America, and many are highly variable and may even hybridize with other members of the subgenus!
