Velvet Mite I think. How does one tell one from another? - Trombidium

Velvet Mite I think. How does one tell one from another? - Trombidium

Size: small
Apparently I have been mistakenly calling these beautiful red creatures Chiggers when they are actually Velvet Mites? There appear to be two genus wher I live, Allothrombium sp. and Trombidium sp.

I often see most of these on wooded trails, but I have seen a few like this one which were on the beach (along the Chesapeake Bay).

This one accidentally tipped itself over so I will post a picture of its underside as well. It actually never could flip itself back over so I helped it and it seemed very relieved to be right side up. Previously it had explored a sand divot and had no problem getting out of the fairly deep depression. Fun to watch.
