Winter ants on bur cucumber - Prenolepis imparis - female

Winter ants on bur cucumber - Prenolepis imparis - Female
Shaw Nature Reserve, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
November 7, 2016
Size: 2.8mm
This cucurbit's tiny flowers were eagerly visited for their nectar by the ants. At this location and date, this annual plant had numerous mature fruits, and would normally be killed by frost, not flowering, this time of year, but P. imparis foragers are nothing if not opportunistic in finding nutrition during the cool months of the year.
