Skipper... but what kind? - Hesperia colorado

Skipper... but what kind? - Hesperia colorado
Elbert County, Colorado, USA
September 5, 2006
Size: Approximately 1"
Feeding on purple coneflower in my garden...6500' elevation in ponderosa pine forest environment.

Western Branded-Skipper
Looks good for a Western Branded-Skipper (Hesperia colorado), which is listed in most field guides as a western subspecies of Common Branded-Skipper (H. comma).

Thanks for the ID
My two guides show photos of the Common Branded-Skipper, but the white patterns on this one's wings were not quite the same. Thanks.

Variability
Branded skippers can be quite variable, and it's hard for field guides to illustrate the variability fully. Kaufman's guide shows a decent variety for this species.
