Random setae on metasoma
There are a few Paruroctonus scorpions that look similar to Smeringurus mesaensis. The easiest and most visible character is prominent in these photos, the numerous setae or hairs that are randomly placed on the backside of the metasoma or tail. Paruroctonus has ordered pairs along the ridges.

Thank you
so much for the ID and helpful information. Is there a good scorpion field guide for California or west coast states that you can recommend?

Sweet!
