Hemileuca maia, maybe? - Hemileuca

Hemileuca maia, maybe? - Hemileuca
Double L Ranch, just north of Richland Springs, San Saba County, Texas, USA
May 13, 2007
Size: about 2 inches
My folks called it an asp and said it would sting like the devil when I picked it up and carried it to them for ID. Good thing I was wearing mechanic's leather gloves! The previous November I had photographed a male Hemileuca maia Buck Moth about 100 yards away from where I found the caterpillar, so I made the leap that, although it isn't exactly the same as the photos I can find of the caterpillar, it's probably the same critter. Anybody know for sure?

Definitely Hemileuca
However, in central Texas we also have H. grotei (and maybe others?). The variation among these caterpillars makes it tough to be sure.
