Hogna carolinensis - female

Hogna carolinensis - Female
Eastern portion of state, New Mexico, USA
July 26, 2007
Webbed over the entrance.
This might have been a result of me sticking the camera in her face the other day.
It is more likely that the western specimens are heavy webbers as a means of defense against Pepsis and other predators while guarding eggs.

It is unusual to see any form of a web from a wolf spider with the exception of Sosippus (in NA).
