Night Beetle - Prionus

Night Beetle - Prionus
Eastham, MA, Cape Cod, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA
July 28, 2007
Size: 1.5 inches
Found this one sitting on the porch when I got home from work last evening. It wasn't moving, so I was able to get a nice photo. A little while later, I was outside on the opposite side of the house with the dog, and there was something flying erratically around the light, buzzing into the side of the building, the back of my head and more...I only got a brief glimpse of that insect, but it looked very similar to this one.

Night Beetle
I saw two of these species in our backyard around July 31. It was rather copper brownish.
My cat had stirred up one at night and I picked it up to investigate. When I picked it up it "bit" me in the hand the surprise effect was enough to let it go.

Prionus
The hind legs are too long and the elytra too short and posteriorly restricted for the Brown Prionid.
I think more a representative of the gens Prionus.

Probably the Brown Prionid,

No.
This just has the wrong body shape, antennae for Orthosoma. This is a Prionus of some species, possibly recently molted from the pupa, as it appears pretty pale....
