Chinese Mantid - Tenodera sinensis

Chinese Mantid - Tenodera sinensis
Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island, USA
November 27, 2016
Size: Approx.1 3/4"
I took this photo with my iPhone. I'm submitting this post from same phone. MY QUESTION: how is this Mantid still alive? At my location, we've had 1 night that went down to freezing. Taken on the 1 sunny day of my observations: 11/27/16. Rest of days 11/28-30/2016 have had two days of heavy rain and today is overcast. On those dates, temps. at night have been above freezing, generally in the 40's. Days have been from mid 50's to 60 degrees. NOTE: ALL TEMPS ARE IN FAHRENHEIT. Food sources seem non-existent. It has remained in same area, next to only plants nearby: a bunch of Japanese Iris. First time I've seen a Praying Mantis here, this late in year. Thank you!

Mantids in temperate environm
Mantids in temperate environments have a surprising ability to survive the cold. I have even found Tenodera sinensis females into late December here in NY! Many times these mantids move at a very slowed pace in the cold and can stay in the same spot like this for weeks.

Moved
Moved from Mantids. This insect is in remarkably good shape. Normally by now you'll see rotting wings and missing limbs and antennae. Good health more than likely played a role in seeing it through the recent cold/wet snaps.

Moved
A lot of insect species can hang in there for quite a while even when it gets cold. Here in Ithaca, NY, we had snow last week that seemed to knock off most everything; however yesterday I heard two or three allard's ground crickets still calling in a field that was snowed over a few days before. So they are a lot tougher than we think.
