Bird grasshopper.
This is a great image of a species of Schistocerca. Not sure if we can get it to species or not, but outstanding clarity here helps a lot:-)

Thanks Eric...if any it looks like the Obscure Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca obscura. It had a big strip down its back.

Actually I take that back...was looking the Wisconsin DNR site to see if they had any info. Looks more like the Schistocerca lineata. Habitat was right too..sand blow outs. Page 25 http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/es/science/publications/GGW_species2.pdf
