Which is the female, and which is the male?

 
I think it depends on how close together the eyes are
If it is like some other families, eyes touching = male, so the male is the one on the bottom in your photo. If I have it right.

I'm pretty sure you have it right; that definitely works with syrphids. As an FYI, sometimes you can roll over insect images and see if there are notations as to gender. (Didn't work in this case.)
