green-winged cicada - Diceroprocta apache

green-winged cicada - Diceroprocta apache
Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA

Size: body about 20 mm

Thanks, Bill
Moved from Diceroprocta to D. apache.

Diceroprocta apache (Teneral)
The pronotal collar appears split, dark along the anterior edge and lighter yellowish-orange along the posterior edge - DIAGNOSTIC of D. apache, esp. in s. Arizona (Tucson area)! There is also indications of reddish-brown to the eyes; this coloration will intensify as the insect sclerotizes/matures.

Diceroprocta semicincta is characterized by a much broader pale band encompassing most, if not all of the pronotal collar - not seen in this critter.

Although similar in many respects, both D. apache and D. semicincta are common in Tucson, however I am inclined towards D. apache for the insect pictured here for reasons stated above.

NOTE: There is still some debate as to how one can accurately make a clear distincton among cinctifera, apache and semicincta.

All three are very similar on several levels and subject to geographic variability (with over lap). Use of the male operculae and shape seems preferred.

The calls of the three taxa are also quite similar and may not be adequately diagnostic for species id. in the field (?).

Still working on this issue ;)

Thanks, Andy
Moved from Cicadas to genus page.

Diceroprocta
A recently molted (teneral) specimen that hasn't "colored up" yet. The green will disappear as the dark colors develop.
