Leaf Beetle - Oulema melanopus

Leaf Beetle - Oulema melanopus
Richmond Hill, York Region, Ontario, Canada
July 28, 2007
Size: 5.5 mm
Ontario Datapoint. On Solidago. Identified based on only collar being red.

Finally a good image of it!
Remains to find out, which species you really have. Some ten years ago, it was established that "O.melanopus" consists of a pair of sibling species, both common and widespread in Europe - so you may have as well the one or the other (I guess no one has cared for it yet).

Maybe this helps:
Oulema melanopus
Oulema duftschmidi
Internal structures of male genitalia are the only safe character.

Thanks, Boris.
I took a look at the links you provided. To me it looks more like the latter. But like you mentioned, the ID's most safely made by examining the male genitalia. I guess for the time being it's OK to leave this image on the species page.

"it's OK to leave this image on the species page"
- SURE!
No matter what it is, it is O.melanopus in N-American understanding.
Myself, I haven´t yet undertaken any splitting activities - too much other things to do, that are more promising . . .
