Red caterpillar
Mohican State Park, Ohio, USA
July 17, 2007
Found crawling across a hiking trail at Mohican State park, Ohio. Beautiful color!

Looks like one of the Prominent
moth caterpillars in its final stage looking for a place to pupate. Can't see enough of the usual pattern to say which one, though someone may know. Maybe Misogada or one of the Heterocampas. Readiness to pupate or parasitism both cause these drastic color changes. Hope an expert stops by and tells us all more!
