Aellopos is a new find for me. I think I have an ID based on Bill Oehlke's excellent
Sphingidae website.
According to the page for
A. titan, he states that "the upperside of the hindwing has pale patches along the costa and inner margin." On the page devoted to the very similar
A. clavipes, Oehlke notes, "Note the absence of white scales on the hindwing anal angle, helping to distinguish this species from Aellopos titan."
These white hindwing scales are indicated by red arrows in one of my other images. As for the other
Aellopos species, none seem to match the location and time of year, so I believe that this is
A. titan, the Titan Sphinx.
Unfortunately I was not out looking for bugs when I spotted this guy, and I had very little time to get any better shots than these. Let me know if you agree or dissagree with the ID.
Update: I'm moving these to the genus page for the time being.
