Horsefly - Tabanus stygius

Horsefly - Tabanus stygius
Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois, USA
August 1, 2007
Size: 1"
This guy was a large and loud fly. Size was relative to a large bumblebee. I got in as close as I felt comfortable, as the bites from these things are horrible. I'm thinking it's Horsefly (Tabanus catenatus), but I was hoping someone would confirm. Thanks

"as the bites from these things are horrible". Interesting, I've heard similar comments about rattlesnake bites.
Looks like Tabanus stygius

Yeah I can attest to how bad
Yeah I can attest to how bad bites can be... Anyway, thanks for the ID, I knew I was close. You have to agree they are ferocious little critters. Thank your for clearing it up for me.

I'll try not to get bitten by either!
