Size: about 3/4 inch
This fly would not stay still for a picture. Note its hairy hind legs. It's the first time I've seen it in my garden.

Clearwing
This seems to be a Clearwing Moth in the family Sesiidae. They are good at looking like various non-moth insects, such as wasps.

to both of you for your rapid reply. I believe you are correct. I have a dorsal view with the two black abdominal dots on an orange background and a black tip to the distal abdomen.
