Tiny butterfly-like insect - Thyris maculata

Tiny butterfly-like insect - Thyris maculata
Salt Point, Dutchess County, New York, USA
August 1, 2007
Size: Approx 5mm to 7mm length
This is a really tiny insect whose wings look a lot like a butterfly, although it flies slowly with very quick wing beats. It was on a damp part of a dirt driveway and I was able to get the camera lens to within about an inch to take these photographs.

I have looked at hundreds of online pictures and through all my butterfly, moth, and insect books, but so far I have not been able to find anything that even faintly resembles it.

Yes!
Thank you *very* much - that is definitely what I saw.

What a great resource this site is - it is now definitely at the top of my bookmark list!

Thanks again to all who responded,

You are most welcome
I have moved your images to the correct place in the guide, now that the identification has been made. (Remember, you can always find your own images by logging in and clicking on the Your Images link.)

Some kind of moth, most likely.
Welcome to Bug Guide. Antennae rules out butterfly, as they have clubbed antennae. Interesting creature. Bet you'll get a solid ID here.
