Conophorus cristatus - male

Conophorus cristatus - Male
Mendocino County, California, USA
May 26, 2007
I photographed this individual on Cammissonia ovata near Rickabaugh Glade, a large vernal pool on South Cow Mountain at an elevation of around 3300'. It's east of Ukiah and NW of Clear Lake. The vernal pool is a few hundred feet long and maybe 90 feet wide. It's relatively pristine and undisturbed, bordered by a grassland full of healthy native vegetation, which in turn is surrounded by chaparral.

Neal Evenhuis (a Bombyliid expert at the Bishop Museum, Hawaii) informed me that it "is a male of Conophorus cristatus Painter. Found only in California".
