Modest Sphinx - Pachysphinx modesta

Modest Sphinx - Pachysphinx modesta
Austinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA
June 25, 2016
The large ova, deposited on the night of 6/18-6/19, were kept at room temperature and hatched a week later. During the course of their development, they first turned from green to purple, resembling grapes, then to a pale green prior to hatching (due to the clear eggshell revealing the fully-developed first instar larva). Hatching was high, but only 3 successfully made it to the pupal stage in my care. Poplars and aspens were not abundant locally, so they were maintained on black willow, which was abundant but dried easily, and on a yellow-twigged weeping willow cultivar, which had thicker leaves but also suffered the same problem.
