Two of these were seen at about 2:00 p.m. on a hot, humid day. They were on a black plastic garbage bag full of leaves, or other garden debris, which had been discarded on the side of the road in a pine barrens area with lots of oak and Red Maple nearby. They both flew often, but always returned to the same area, which also had a very large diameter cut log (possibly White Oak) which had a big decaying area on the end. The two beetles were very attracted to this particular spot. Between the garbage bag and the decaying log, the immediate area had a rather pungent odor.
