There's a couple of willow trees, and plenty of alder in the yard.

My guess:
genus Dicty*la - but wait for confirmation, please. (Or tell plant, insofar you remember - it should be in Boraginadeae family for that genus).

 
Physatocheila possibly sp. variegata
The genus Dictyla is indeed simmilar to Physatocheila, however, the first thing to note here is that this specimen has spines on the head, the genus Dictyla has no spines on the head. Tom, any alder or willow trees arround?

 
Collected in a sweep net
mostly in oak, maple, and poplar trees. We have a meadow with lots of different flowering plants and grasses nearby.
I still have the insect, in case it's needed for identification.
