In this picture, one gets a good idea about the great length of the furca. In Symphypleona, the tips of the furca (the mucrones, singular: mucro) often reach to the mouth. That explains why among Symphypleona are so many powerfull jumpers.
Note that Collembola do not have external mouthparts (as in insects). All mouthparts are internal to the buccal cone. This is clearly seen in this picture. This condition is called 'entognathy'. Entognathy occurs also in the to Collembola unrelated Protura and Diplura.
