Dubious Tiger Moth (Spilosoma dubia)? - Spilosoma dubia - male

Dubious Tiger Moth (Spilosoma dubia)? - Spilosoma dubia - Male
Megget, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA
February 25, 2017
Size: Wingspan 43.5 mm
I need advice on a specimen I recently collected. Preliminary id suggested Spilosoma congrua, but upon spreading the wings the abdominal coloration suggested Estigmene acrea as there appeared to be too much orange on the abdomen for S. dubia, although wing patterning is similar for S. dubia but browner. The fore leg coloration appeared to suggest S. virginica. Comparison with specimens of these species at the BOLD website suggested that S. dubia may be the species based upon a specimen collected in North Carolina.

Moved, Spilosoma dubia
Moved from Salt Marsh Moth. You had this right the first time. Pattern fits Spilosoma, not Estigmene, and pectinate antennae indicate this is a male, not a female.

I Fox, thanks for the confirmation!

Female Estigmene acrea looks
Female Estigmene acrea looks right to me to.

Female - Salt Marsh Moth
Please check her out. The fore-wings have spots that seem to vary a little bit, on some members of this tribe. However, the hind-wings, abdomen and legs help to greatly reduce the number of possible choices. Nice Job!
Estigmene acrea: ♀ (widespread) The males have an orange colored hind-wing.
