American Painted Lady - Vanessa virginiensis

American Painted Lady - Vanessa virginiensis
Grand Manan Island County, New Brunswick, Canada
Size: apros 2.25 " wingspread
This specimen was feeding on false arnica flowers at the edge of the beach. It was flitting from flower to flower and did not stay for very long on any flower. I believe that it is an American Painted Lady after consulting a few books and bugguide.net. The information at this link is what has enforced that belief: http://bugguide.net/node/view/125111
However, the Field Guide to Butterflies East of the Great Plains states, "the submarginal spots on the hind wing contain blue, beneath there are only two of them, very large." I don't see any blue in those on the top of the wing, but beneath the wing I see two large spots. Please clarify this for me.

I believe the amount of blue is variable. The two large eyespots on the hindwing and the white dot in the large orange patch on the upperside of the forewing clinches the identification as Vanessa virginiensis.

Thanks for the clarification
Thank you Dr. Van Dyk and Kenneth. I was sure about the white spot on the forewing and the large eyespots on the hindwing, but the lack of blue was confusing.

American Lady
This is an American Lady. You can tell by the faint white dot in the center of the largest orange cell.
