Our Family Would Like To Know?
Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA
Size: Less than 1 cm/caterpilla
Hi Folks:

My boy Paul, a budding naturalist, found these small caterpillars swarming in cracks between the bricks in our front walk today. There were three or four separate masses of them. The amazing thing is that the masses were moving as one creature.

We have spent some time poking around online, but as of yet have not been able to figure out what they are called, and what there life cycle is.

Does anyone in the group have any thoughts on the subject?

Thanks,

Allan & Paul Wilson in Simsbury

We have some similar images
in the guide under Sciaridae larvae. Check out the images here and read the comments under the images. There are several images of mass migrations mixed in with images of adults.

That looks like the bug. Thanks
Hello John & Jane:

Well the photos from others that you linked me to sure look to be of a similar creature. We will read up on them.

Thanks a lot.
