Anteater Scarab? - Cremastocheilus

Anteater Scarab? - Cremastocheilus
NE of California City (Near Desert Tortoise Natural Area), Kern County, California, USA
March 18, 2017
Size: about 16-18mm
Saw three or four of these beetles flying about two or three feet above the ground, over a sandy patch, mid-day. In flight they looked almost bluish, and at first I thought they might be a kind of bee or sand wasp, but then realized they were beetles. I watched one until it landed, whereupon it remained motionless, holding its legs stiffly outstretched. It didn't even move when I touched it -- the only thing I saw it do was tuck its antennae under its head. I did a bit of looking around here on the site, and guessed it to be a type of anteater scarab, Cremastocheilus sp.?
