black assassin bug - Reduvius personatus

black assassin bug - Reduvius personatus
Brossard, Quebec, Canada
August 7, 2007
Size: 1.5cm
This was resting upside down in a spiders web (funnel web). The spider was agitated but avoided the bug - probably a good decision. I think it is a masked hunter or black corsair assassin bug, but none of the images in the guides show the very conspicuous orange patch. Photographed at night.

Reduvius personatus.
I can't explain the orange spot, either, and it seems to be absent from the 'other' front wing, but this is an adult masked hunter. Seems to be a "good year" for them:-)
